MAXON and MAXON CV synthetic absorbable sutures are prepared from polyglyconate, a copolymer of glycolic acid and trimethylene carbonate. The advanced extrusion process of the molecule of polyglyconate gives the suture: • Excellent in-vivo strength retention • Excellent knot tying security • Excellent handling • Minimal memory MAXON and MAXON CV synthetic absorbable sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in pediatric cardiovascular tissue, where growth is expected to occur, and in peripheral vascular surgery. MAXON and MAXON CV synthetic absorbable sutures are not indicated for use in adult cardiovascular tissue, ophthalmic surgery, microsurgery and neural tissues. The use of this suture is contraindicated in patients with known sensitivities or allergies to its components. These sutures, being absorbable, should not be used where extended approximation of tissue is required or for fixation of permanent cardiovascular prostheses or synthetic grafts. MAXON and MAXON CV synthetic absorbable sutures elicit a minimal acute inflammatory reaction in tissues, followed by gradual encapsulation of the suture by fibrous connective tissue. Progressive loss of tensile strength and eventual absorption of MAXON sutures occurs by means of hydrolysis. Experimental studies with MAXON and MAXON CV suture produced no evidence of antigenicity, systemic toxicity, carcinogenicity, mutagenicity teratogenicity or adverse effects on reproductive performance. Subcutaneous tissue implantation studies in rats indicate MAXON sutures retain approximately 75% of initial tensile strength at two weeks, 65% of at three weeks and 50% at four weeks post-implant. Absorption begins as a loss of tensile strength without appreciable loss of mass. Absorption of MAXON sutures is minimal until about 60 days after implant and is essentially complete within six months. Ethylene oxide
